Zhijie Founding Partner / Head Coach Chia Zhi Jie founded FightSpur Karate in 2019, on the principle of bringing practical and effective training to karate. He incorporated the training methodologies of modern martial arts (Kickboxing, Boxing, MMA), into the karate curriculum, retaining the content, but replacing and adding on to the curriculum and delivery. His personal style combines the evasiveness of sport karate, with the sturdiness of sound kickboxing fundamentals. As a coach, he emphasizes realistic training and live resistance as the primary modes of practice. Zhi Jie is a 3rd degree black belt, and an amateur Kickboxing / Muay Thai fighter. He is a NROC certified karate coach, and has been teaching karate since 2016. |
Wanfa COACH Yeo Wan Fa picked up karate in 2009 and has been coaching since 2012. He was the gold medalist in the 2013 Karate Union of Singapore <60kg male kumite event. He excels at high volume pressure fighting and clinching. His personal style favours close range in-fighting and takedowns. Wan Fa is a 1st degree black belt in Goju Ryu karate. Apart from karate, Wan Fa is also a accomplished in Japanese Jiujitsu. He has accumulated competition experience in both arts over the years. |
Kairi Board Member / Coach Kairi "Ghost" Kouyama has been practicing karate since he was a toddler. He has a blended fighting style, incorporating sport karate and modern kickboxing. Fun tip: ask him about his "elbow tattoos" in class! Kairi is a 3rd degree black belt in Shorin Ryu Karate, a blue belt under Zhi Jie and a NROC karate coach. Alongside his karate, he is also a professional Muay Thai fighter. Having both trained and competed in Thailand. |
Iain Operations Manager / Board MEmber / Coach Iain "The Predator" Lim is an a amateur kickboxer and Sanda fighter. He possesses a caring and nurturing personality, making him an excellent kids coach. He is also ferocious in the ring, possessing a relentless fighting style. Combined with his huge muscular frame, makes us thankful that weight classes exist. Iain is a blue belt in FightSpur Karate. He teaches in the kids classes. |
Bryan Board Member / Coach Bryan Ong is a home-grown instructor of FightSpur. He started learning karate as a student of Zhi Jie and has gotten quite proficient at it over the years. Bryan has accumulated much experience as a competitor, representing FightSpur in both karate and kickboxing competitions regularly. Bryan is a blue belt in FightSpur Karate, under Zhi Jie. He teaches in both Adult and Kids classes. |
Wei Peng Board Member / COACH Lim Wei Peng, aka "Dropped" was one of the first students of FightSpur. He is an accomplished competitor, both in amateur kickboxing and sport karate. His fighting style mirrors Zhi Jie, his coach. Wei Peng is a blue belt in FightSpur Karate. He is also a taekwondo black belt. He teaches in both Adult and Kids classes. |
Kelly BOARD MEMBER / ASSISTANT COACH Kelly "SOMA" Cheong is a lifelong martial artist. Growing up in the underbelly of society, has given her a unique understanding of "street fighting". Also she has racked up over a decade of experience in Muay Thai, before dipping her toes into karate. Kelly is a yellow belt in FightSpur Karate and is gradually perfecting her form, as part of her apprenticeship on the path to becoming "sensei" in her own right. |
Martin ASSISTANT COACH "The Prodigy" In 2023, only 6 months after picking up karate, he won a silver medal in the KUS Interschool championships. Placing him 2nd in Singapore. He has further developed in leaps and bounds since then. He recently started picking up coaching as a way to give back to the community. Martin is a yellow belt in FightSpur Karate, under Zhi Jie. He teaches in the kids classes. |
