FAQ
What do I wear to class?
First timers are welcome to train in comfortable sports attire. Regular students are required to wear a gi (uniform), this is because some of our training involves us grabbing our partners' gi. You can obtain a gi yourself or approach the instructor for recommendations.
What equipment do I need for class?
First timers don't need to bring anything (save of course your water bottle). Regular students will require a set of gloves, shin-guards, uniform and mouth-guard. If you have any existing equipment, feel free to bring them for your first class as we do not have any to loan.
Can I pause my membership or extend my term?
Memberships can be extended for illness/injuries, examinations and travel. Requests for extensions may be submitted via email / text and is subject to approval. Please inform us before the intended period of absence. Unfortunately we will not be able to process term extension requests after the period of absence. *Limited to one extension per term (max 2mth pause) , term extensions not available for payments made to Community Centers*
What style of karate do you practice?
Our training combines practices from sport karate and kickboxing. We believe that the fragmentation of karate into the many different "styles" in existence limits the development of the art. At the end of the day, we have four limbs and there are only so many ways in which we can move them. As such, we do not identify ourselves as belonging to any particular style. Rather, we focus on developing skills that are effective, regardless of their origins.
Are there age limitations?
Adults of all ages are welcome. We also accept juniors, aged 5 and up, for our kids classes.
I have trained in another martial art / style before, can I wear my old belt?
Different arts have different methods of promotion and hold each belt to different standards. Please approach the instructor for clarification. You may be asked to keep your old belt or be given a new belt.
Will there be sparring? / Will I get injured.
TLDR: Yes sparring makes up a huge portion of our training, but we go very light and look after our training partners.
Long Answer: To train any martial art effectively, practitioners must test and practice their techniques with live and active resistance. That live resistance can only come from sparring, any school that doesn't practice sparring is doing its students a disservice. Not to worry, as beginners will only engage in light sparring. As they progress, higher intensity sparring will be introduced.
How long are lessons?
