FightSpur Karate
FightSpur Karate combines the core principles of sport karate and kickboxing, creating an effective and efficient system geared towards self-defence and competitive fighting. It incorporates sport karate's long range attacks, distance control, timing and footwork, with kickboxing's long combinations, short range attacks and conditioning. This is a martial art designed to impart effective skills, and is applicable in both full contact and sport karate competitions. We routinely compete in both Karate and Kickboxing competitions. |
Training Philosophy
At FightSpur, we train with an emphasis on efficiency and effectiveness. Our classes are designed to develop reflexes, muscle memory, cardiovascular endurance and general fitness. Lessons typically include partner drills, pad work, agility training and light sparring. Join us and learn to become an effective martial artist! |
Fighting Style
Our style is defined by movement and footwork. Our students excel at evasiveness and distance control, moving in and out of fighting range with ease. Being in range to do damage, and moving out of striking range to evade counters. We hold to heart the phrase "Whoever controls the distance, controls the fight". |
Belts
Promotions in our school are based solely on performance and competency, we do not use tests or gradings. Instead, instructors monitor the students' progress and promote them once they reach the required proficiency. Students can earn 4 stripes on each belt before being promoted to the next belt. Stripes on a black belt represent the degrees or "dans".
Getting promoted is a big deal! For adults, while not guaranteed, it takes on average 350 hours of training to earn a FightSpur karate blue belt and over 2000 hours to earn a black belt. The black belt is a huge achievement and translates to around 9-12 years, of training multiple times a week.
Kids have a separate belt system, with more incremental belts. This is because children require more frequent rewards to stay motivated. The kids' green belt is equivalent to the adult blue belt. Upon reaching 16 years of age, a child's belt is automatically converted to the adult equivalent.
